Statement from UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez on Federal Quantum Computing Investments

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 21, 2026) — University at Albany President Havidán Rodríguez said the following about Thursday’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Commerce of major federal funding for quantum computing in the Albany area.

"This $1.3 billion federal investment in quantum computing innovation in the Capital Region once again proves what we’ve known for three decades: The road to the most powerful technologies of the future passes through Albany.

We are thrilled at the opportunities this presents for University at Albany faculty, researchers and students as we work alongside industry partners like IBM, GlobalFoundries and NY Creates to pioneer new technologies and educate the workforce needed to create, build and apply them responsibly to advance the public good.”
