ALBANY, N.Y. (May 19, 2026) — The University at Albany has received the inaugural Top Colleges for Innovation Award from Insight Into Academia magazine, the nation’s longest-running publication advancing best practices in higher education. The award recognizes colleges and universities where innovation is embedded in their vision, strategy and measurable impact. UAlbany will be featured in the June 2026 issue of Insight Into Academia magazine.

“Innovation drives UAlbany’s mission and is reflected in our work, from academic programs to groundbreaking research addressing society’s most pressing challenges,” said Samuel Caldwell, vice president for Inclusive Excellence and chief diversity officer. “The University remains deeply and steadfastly committed to creating meaningful opportunities that serve our campus and community, both now and in the future.”

Insight Into Academia selected UAlbany for its broad, institution-wide approach to innovation across research, academics, student success, community building, infrastructure and global partnerships.

UAlbany is expanding its research and community impact through strategic investments that connect discovery, sustainability, technology and economic development. The University generates an annual economic impact of $1.1 billion, while research and development activity increased to $472 million in 2024, ranking UAlbany 9th nationally among public institutions without medical schools.

UAlbany’s student-centered programs also position the University as a national leader in educational equity and social mobility. With first-generation students making up more than 40 percent of undergraduates, UAlbany has expanded academic, financial and experiential resources that give students the tools to persist and graduate.

“The Insight Into Academia Top Colleges for Innovation Award is a prestigious national distinction honoring institutions driving the next chapter of higher education,” said Holly Mendelson, co-owner and publisher of Insight Into Academia magazine. “At a time when colleges and universities are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate their value, innovation needs to be a priority in today’s ever-changing landscape. These award-winning institutions stand apart by anticipating and meeting today’s challenges, creating and activating bold ideas, and setting the standard for what excellence and forward-thinking leadership looks like across the academy.”
