ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2026) — University at Albany President Havidán Rodríguez traveled to Quebec last week as part of a New York delegation exploring new opportunities for international research and academic collaboration in fields, such as artificial intelligence, quantum science, semiconductors and biotechnology.
Organized by the State University of New York (SUNY) as part of its systemwide global engagement strategy, the visit brought together leaders from UAlbany, Binghamton University, the University at Buffalo and Stony Brook University for meetings with universities, research institutes and organizations in Montréal, Québec City and Sherbrooke.
Leaders discussed areas where SUNY campuses and their Quebec counterparts have complementary research strengths and explored opportunities to expand faculty, student and institutional partnerships.
For UAlbany, the conversations highlighted the University’s expertise in AI, nanotechnology and semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology and interdisciplinary research.
During the five-day visit, the SUNY representatives met with leaders at Polytechnique Montréal, Université de Montréal, IVADO, Mila – Quebec AI Institute, HEC Montréal, Université Laval, the Institut national de la recherche scientifique, McGill University, École de technologie supérieure, Technum Québec and Université de Sherbrooke. The group also attended a reception hosted by the U.S. Consulate General in Montréal.
President Rodríguez and Provost Carol H. Kim spoke about the research taking place across UAlbany’s colleges and research centers, including work connected to AI Plus, the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering and The RNA Institute. They also discussed the University’s industry and government partnerships, participation in Empire AI, and research in areas including life sciences, nanotechnology and quantum science.
The visit further supported UAlbany’s efforts to connect its research enterprise with institutions around the world. Earlier this year, the University partnered with Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences in Bengaluru, India, on engineering education, advanced skills development, faculty and student exchange and research collaboration.
