ALBANY, N.Y. (May 11, 2026) — Five University at Albany faculty members have been awarded Distinguished Professorships, the highest academic rank in the State University of New York system.

The new Distinguished Professors are Jeanette Altarriba, Youqin Huang, Melinda Larsen, Shao Lin and Juan Andrés Melendez. The title ranks above full professor and is conferred by the SUNY board of trustees to faculty who have made significant contributions to research and scholarship in their respective fields, garnering national or international prominence.

“Dean Altarriba and professors Huang, Larsen, Lin and Melendez are not only leaders in their fields but, as teaching faculty, they share their expertise with the students they mentor in their classrooms and labs,” said UAlbany Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Carol Kim. “I am so proud of these colleagues and their promotion to Distinguished Professor.”

SUNY will hold a ceremony for all new Distinguished Professors in August. Portraits of UAlbany’s new awardees will join the wall of Distinguished Professors in the President’s Reading Room on the second floor of the University Library.
