Studying Miniature Hearts at CNSE

By Michael Parker

ALBANY, N.Y. (June 24, 2025) — Doctoral student Maria Paredes-Espinosa first heard of the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering while she was a student at Yachay University in her native Ecuador, a pioneering institution with the goal of improving her country's scientific and technical expertise.

At UAlbany, she found herself right at home, thanks to CNSE's role as hub for innovation and cutting-edge research.

"CNSE was designed to make something that's designed to change the world," says Paredes-Espinosa.

In the lab of Associate Professor Janet Paluh, Paredes-Espinosa has been given the opportunity to study miniature hearts, a passion project of hers, especially after she underwent life-saving surgery to correct a congenital heart disease when she was 23 years-old.

Paredes-Espinosa's work and experience at UAlbany were recently featured in the Times Union.
