Howard Schwartzberg: Volume, Surface, Core
October 3, 2026 – April 2, 2027
1st Floor Main Gallery
Schwartzberg reconfigures the physical materials of painting to create new spatial and perceptual relationships. Exploring traditional painterly ideas of support and surface, as well as illusion, he creates sculptural forms that appear to be volumes of paint, cradled in burlap or resting on layers of canvas and wood. Viewers can move through the newly-commissioned work, Orange Slice (2026), a nine-foot-high, site-specific sculpture situated at the center of the museum, and become immersed in its two expansive fields of color. New and earlier works in the exhibition, including previously unexhibited drawings, represent over thirty years of the artist’s practice.
Support provided by the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, The University at Albany Foundation, the University at Albany Alumni Association, the University Auxiliary Services at Albany, the Ann C. Mataraso Endowment Fund, the Robin Kanson Lewis ’70 Exhibition Endowment Fund, the University Art Museum Director’s Fund, and the Jack and Gertrude Horan Memorial Fund for Student Outreach.
