SSW hosts conversation on social & political agendas post-election

On February 10, 2021, the School of Social Welfare welcomed the Hon. Dr. Dorcey Applyrs and faculty member Dr. Robert L. Miller, Jr., for a virtual event entitled, Strategies for Centering our Social and Political Agendas in this Era of Renewal.

"This workshop evolved out of conversations with students and colleagues who shared their frustrations, concerns and eagerness to engage in post-election conversations that target how the [social work] profession can take action to eliminate oppressive structural barriers and ensure that all human rights are protected,” said Professor Lani V. Jones, who organized and moderated the event.

Students and members of the university community participated via Zoom and Facebook Live, including asking the panelists about ways they can make change in their own communities.

“Working at the local level is so rewarding because you get to connect with the people closest to the pain and the problems,” said Applyrs during the session. “I think it is great training ground for any student who wants to get involved in social work, public policy, and politics. You are in the seat of government right here in Albany and there are a plethora of opportunities for you.”

Dr. Applyrs, originally from Washington DC, spoke about the transformation she experienced as a UAlbany student. She changed from wanting to work at federal agencies like the Centers for Disease Control, to realizing the impact that can be made at the local level on issues such as police reform and increasing access to COVID-19 testing and vaccine distribution in communities of color.

“Do I feel compelled to make a difference and how do it do it?” stated Miller, as he spoke about the many factors that influence why an individual becomes involved and wants to make change. Current research has show an increase in the involvement of young people in community organizing and Dr. Miller discussed the connection between community involvement and a local agenda that is relevant to the needs of those in the community.

“Students and alumni walked away knowing ways in which they can play a significant role in the change process,” said Jones. “Who else could lead such an enriching conversation than our colleagues Drs. Applyrs and Miller. They are change-makers and way-makers for racial, social, economic and political justice in the City of Albany and beyond.”
