Undergraduate Student Creates Drive to Help Those Experiencing Homelessness

ALBANY, N.Y. (December 16th, 2020) – After writing her undergraduate capstone project on homelessness, undergraduate public health student Taylor Manzelli felt compelled to directly support the homeless population in the Capital Region and created the Toasty Tootsies donation drive.    

“Clothing articles are frequently over-donated, while hygiene and undergarment items are usually forgotten about,” Manzelli explains. “This means that often the needs of those experiencing homelessness are not met.”    

Toasty Tootsies calls on local community members for donations of critical items, such as socks, underwear, shampoo, toothpaste and soap. Manzelli works with local organizations such as Joseph’s House and Shelter in Troy, Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless in Albany, and Street Soldiers of Albany. She collects items through Toasty Tootsies and works to distribute them where the need is greatest.    

“It is unacceptable for people within our community to be deprived of the resources and care imperative to experience a happy, healthy life,” says Manzelli. “I hope that my drive can help to spread the word on what products are most needed and encourages others to get involved in any way to help those around them. Especially during the pandemic, love, care, and companionship are needed most in our community.”
