Meet Taylor Manzelli: CDPHP Scholar and MPH Student

A portrait of Taylor Manzelli.

Where is “home” for you?

"Geographically, the Capital Region has always been home for me. I grew up about 15 minutes away from the uptown UAlbany campus, dreaming of the day I would get to set foot there officially as a student and not just as a visitor. Growing up, you, could find me volunteering at a plethora of local organizations-- Equinox, the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York, Joseph's House, and IPH, just to name a few-- because of my love for this community. Being able to give back to my community is what ignited my passion for public health because I could see the real-time impact it that was occurring. And because of that, home is also wherever I can connect with people who share the same passion of public health as me. Whether that's in a School of Public Health classroom, at a protest or demonstration, at a local business, or wherever we may find ourselves working toward creating a society that is equitable for everyone."

Why did you apply to UAlbany?

"I know this sounds cliche, but I like to think that UAlbany chose me. My undergraduate career started away from home, and due to many unforeseen circumstances, I returned home and transferred to UAlbany at the start of my third year. When I stepped on the campus as a student for the first time, it felt right-- like a weight was lifted off my shoulders because I had finally found the place I was meant to be. And it only felt natural to continue on to the UAlbany School of Public Health, especially with all of the incredible opportunities offered there, such as their direct partnership with the New York State Department of Health."

What are your public health interests?

"My overall greatest passion in public health is health equity. Everyone should have equitable access to health care and health services for the highest quality of life. My specific interests lie in health policy in relation to mental health services, and ensuring that everyone has access to the services they want/need and also to ensure that health policies are being carried out equitably."

What are your career goals?

"While I don't have my eyes set on any specific organization, I do envision myself in a leadership role. Implementing and enforcing policy/legislation that ensures access to equitable health care is my primary goal, and I'm open and curious to any role that allows me to do so."
