A Message to the Class of 2020

Dear Great Danes Class of 2020:

As we continue to take the necessary steps to combat COVID-19, we have made the very difficult but necessary decision to postpone our May 2020 Commencement ceremonies. By sharing this news now, we hope to provide you and your families with adequate time to adjust expectations and travel plans. We know that this is a major disappointment, but given the circumstances, it was simply unavoidable.

Please know that this change will not affect the awarding of your degree. As usual, students who complete their degree requirements in time for spring 2020 conferral will receive their diplomas by mail. For more details, please visit the Information for Students page on our COVID-19 website, which will be updated frequently.

We know that you have worked very hard to reach this critical milestone. As an institution of higher education, we hold dear the history and traditions of our commencement ceremonies to celebrate your success and the completion of your degree. However, at this time we must focus on two primary concerns: first, your health and safety; and second, supporting you to reach the finish line of graduation—especially in this new remote learning environment.

As you may know, a national conversation has emerged about how to address commencement delays and the many ways that we can celebrate the success and achievements of our students. Please know that a dedicated team of UAlbany staff is already reviewing different possibilities, and we will share details with you about our plans as soon as possible.

Again, we share your disappointment, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this and many other unprecedented challenges.

As Great Danes, we pitch in, we persevere, and we will get through this together!

Sincerely,

Havidán Rodríguez
President
