Our Commitment to Diversity and Educational Equity

Dear UAlbany Community,

As you may already know, today the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision impacting the way affirmative action is used in college admissions across the country.

With more than 40 percent of our undergraduates identifying as Black or Latina/o, the University at Albany is one of the most diverse public research institutions in the country. We have achieved this remarkable and nationally recognized level of representation without using race or ethnicity as factors in admissions.

At UAlbany, we are strongly committed to offering life-changing educational opportunities for all our students. Our focus on student success is paramount to who we are, and we have an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Given our ongoing and systematic work in this space, UAlbany has long been recognized as a top performer nationally in social mobility and advancing educational equity. Although much more work remains to be done, we are extremely proud of the achievements of our students and our institution.

In addition to our outstanding academic programs, excellent scholarship and research innovation, and our world-class faculty, students from underrepresented communities attend UAlbany because they see the diversity on our campus and how students with similar lived experiences thrive here and succeed once they graduate. Consequently, today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision will not impact the University’s admission process nor will it weaken our commitment to cultivating the diverse learning environments in which innovation, success, and understanding flourish.

Thank you again for everything you do to contribute to the diverse and inclusive campus community that we cherish.

I hope you have a very enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,
