Angie Y. Chung, Professor of Sociology
Professor Chung is currently working on a book on the immigrant politics of urban redevelopment in Koreatown and Monterey Park, and a second study on the impact of COVID-19 on anti-Asian racism and international education. Her areas of expertise include race and ethnicity, immigration and the second generation, community and urban sociology, Asian American studies, qualitative methods, gender and family, and international education.
Fan Yang, Assistant Professor of Communication
Using classic (e.g., survey and experiment) and advanced quantitative research methods (e.g., social network analysis, sentiment analysis), Professor Yang’s research examines racial discrimination and online social support to marginalized populations such as racial minorities and patients with stigmatized diseases.
Youqin Huang, Professor of Geography and Planning
Dr. Huang is also the Executive Director of the Confucius Institute for China’s Culture and Economy and a Research Associate for the Center for Social and Demographic Analysis. Dr. Huang’s research aims to understand the unprecedented market transition in China and its impact on Chinese people and places, focusing on housing, migration, and urban development.
Andrew Sangpil Byon, Associate Professor of East Asian Studies
Professor Byon is a Korean applied linguist whose primary research areas are sociolinguistics, Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) pedagogy, and Second Language Acquisition (SLA). He is currently working on an edited volume titled, “The Routledge Handbook of Korean as a Second Language.” The handbook is the first authoritative body of work written and published in English to serve as a comprehensive reference guide for the rapidly expanding KFL field.
Ho Kwan Cheung, Assistant Professor of Psychology
Dr. Cheung’s research focuses on understanding experiences of women in the workplace, particularly as they intersect with the work-family interface. Aside from her academic work, she has also served as an expert witness in employment discrimination legal cases.
Chun-Yu Ho, Assistant Professor of Economics
Professor Ho's research focuses on airline, financial, health care and motion picture industries. His other research interests include industrial organization, development economics and applied econometrics.
Brian Tang, Associate Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences
Professor Tang’s research foci are in tropical cyclones and severe weather, and aims increase awareness of and opportunities for minorities and marginalized individuals in atmospheric science. His love for weather grew out of being fascinated with the wild swings in weather while growing up in Colorado and Texas.
