Geography, Planning, and Sustainability alumni spotlight: Dr. Clare Gaffey
The Department of Geography, Planning, and Sustainability is pleased to highlight the accomplishments of alumna Dr. Clare Gaffey, who earned her MA in Geography from our department in 2018 before completing her PhD at Clark University.
Dr. Gaffey is now conducting innovative research on Arctic marine ecosystems, investigating how phytoplankton communities are responding to rapid environmental change in the Arctic Ocean. Her work integrates field observations from research expeditions, satellite remote sensing and environmental modeling to better understand the effects of declining sea ice and changing ocean conditions on Arctic ecosystems.
During her time at UAlbany, Clare distinguished herself through her enthusiasm for emerging geospatial technologies, particularly drone applications and remote sensing. She excelled in climatology courses taught by Dr. Andrei Lapenas and remote sensing courses taught by Dr. Alexander Buyantuev, developing analytical and technical skills that have continued to support her successful research career.
We are proud to see Clare making important contributions to Arctic science and serving as an outstanding example of the impact and success of our GPS alumni community.
