Grads at a Glance: Italy, Internships Contribute to Academic and Personal Growth

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 13, 2026) — Jacqueline Arena came to the University at Albany from Long Island, excited for the school’s unique campus layout and nearby family. But it was a semester in Milan, Italy, where her studies in political science and English took on a new meaning.
“Going abroad, learning about new cultures — and being independent while doing so — has been one of my most formative adventures,” Arena said.
Arena also interned locally with Heart of Moisture, a company dedicated to providing students with proper hygiene products, through UAlbany’s Minerva Center for High-Impact Practices and the SUNY Program for Experiential & Entrepreneurial Development (SPEED). The program matches students with internships with a startup or small business. Heart of Moisture was co-founded by a UAlbany alum.
Following graduation, Arena will begin a new chapter working in New York City with the information service company AlphaSights, which connects investment firms, consultancies and Fortune 500 companies with industry professionals.
“Attending the University at Albany has prepared me to become a young professional by giving me opportunities to grow academically, professionally and personally,” Arena said. “Engaging in academic and professional opportunities on campus has strengthened my communication skills and confidence, preparing me for my career ahead.”
