Meal Plan Options
Campus dining is an essential component of the college experience. The meal plans at UAlbany include declining balance funds called Discount Dollars that activate a 40% discount at retail dining venues. Meal plans are purchased per semester.
All students living in resident housing on campus are required to be on a meal plan. Students living in University apartments or commuting can choose any meal plan offered, but are not required to purchase a plan. There are no exceptions to the mandatory dining plan requirement.
The change period for Spring 2025 is January 1, 2026 to February 3, 2026. To add or change your meal plan, log into the ID Card Portal with your NetID and password. Resident students required to have a meal plan can make changes only as applicable per terms. Voluntary meal plan students can add a meal plan at any time during the semester, but a meal plan can not be changed/cancelled or charged to a student account after February 3, 2026.
myUnlimited Meal Plans

This plan offers two (2) options to choose from, myUnlimited #1 and #2. Both offer unlimited meal swipes, while #2 offers a greater balance of Discount Dollars. Freshman are automatically assigned myUnlimited #1 but may upgrade to #2 through their student account.
myUnlimited in Resident Dining
The myUnlimited Meal Plan is required for all freshmen living in residence halls. This plan will allow for unlimited meal swipes at Indigenous and State dining rooms. Meal swipes used in resident dining rooms on the myUnlimited Meal Plan do not deduct any Discount Dollars.
myUnlimited in Retail Dining
The myUnlimited Meal Plan also provides the flexibility to eat at retail locations at deep discounts with Discount Dollars. This Meal Plan uses your ID card like a debit card account and carries your Discount Dollars to spend at retail locations for meals and beverages. Each time you swipe at a retail dining location, your meal plan’s Discount Dollars will get activated and the venue-specific discount (a 40% discount at campus/Sodexo retail brands and local/national retail brands) will be automatically calculated and the balance will be debited for your purchase.
Your remaining Discount Dollars balance will appear on the register display and your receipt. If you run out of Discount Dollars before the end of the semester and would like to add more onto your myUnlimited Meal Plan, you can add up to $500 each semester. Remember your meal plan is tax free, so you will also be saving an additional 8% on all discounted sale prices. Please note that other campus funds will not activate these discounts, i.e., Munch Money, Podium, Campus Gold, F/S Dining Plan. You will also use your ID card to 'swipe-in' (for tracking purposes only) at resident dining locations — no Discount Dollars will be debited.

General Policies
All student meal plans, whether mandatory or voluntary, are tax free and subject to New York State tax laws. Based on these tax codes, meal plans are non-transferable and non-refundable with few exceptions. Anyone suspected of misusing a meal plan will be reported to Community Standards. Repeat offenders will be handled through the student conduct process and may face disciplinary action.
If you misplace, lose or believe your ID Card has been stolen, you must deactivate it as soon as possible. You are responsible for keeping your ID Card secure and you are liable for all activity on your ID Card until it is deactivated. Refunds are not provided for money or meals fraudulently spent on an ID Card. Please log into your Mobile ID or the ID Card Portal to deactivate or reactivate your card at any time. Mobile ID will continue to work when a physical card is deactivated. You may also obtain a temporary ID Card at UPD or a Quad Office if needed.
Meal plans (including declining balance funds) may never be used to purchase food for anyone other than the plan owner; therefore, you are required to present your UAlbany ID card for all meal plan transactions (second form of photo ID will be required for transactions over $25). If your card is found in the possession of anyone else, it will be confiscated and destroyed and you will be charged for a replacement. If your Mobile ID is found in the possession of anyone else, it will be suspended indefinitely.
Nutrition resources and accommodations are available for students with food allergies, medical/psychological conditions or special dietary preferences. Learn more about nutritional services.
Meal plans are activated each semester when residence halls officially open for occupancy and end when halls officially close. During times when the quad dining rooms are closed but the residence halls are open, all declining balance tenders can be used in retail locations, as available.
The dining rooms are not open when the University is not in session, which includes Thanksgiving, intersession, winter and spring breaks. However, all declining balance tenders may be used at campus retail locations, as available. Resident and retail dining hours of operation may change during University vacations, holidays, or in emergency situations. All meal plan declining balance funds (i.e., Discount Dollars and Munch Money) are forfeit at spring Commencement each year and cannot be used over the summer. Should enrollment end prior to spring Commencement these funds will be forfeit at that time; for additional details please consult the Housing License even if your meal plan is voluntary.
Meal Plan Requirement & Changes
A. UAlbany Traditional Residence Hall Students
Students living in traditional residence halls (i.e., Indigenous and State Quads) are required to have a meal plan. A designated meal plan is automatically assigned to students as follows:
Fall Semester (or after an absence from housing, e.g., study abroad):
- Freshmen living in traditional residence hall housing are automatically assigned the myUnlimited Meal Plan #1, but can change to the myUnlimited Meal Plan #2 during the first 10 days of the semester.
- Non-freshmen living in traditional residence hall housing are automatically assigned the myFlex Meal Plan #2, but can change to the myUnlimited(#1 or #2), the myFlex Meal Plan (#1 to #5) during the first 10 days of the semester.
Spring Semester
- Freshmen living in traditional residence hall housing are automatically assigned the same myUnlimited plan as the previous semester but can change to the other myUnlimited Meal Plan plan during the first 10 days of the semester.
- Non-freshmen living in traditional residence hall housing are automatically assigned the same plan as the previous semester but can change to the myFlex Meal Plan (#1 to #5) during the first 10 days of the semester.
Traditional residence hall students may change their automatically assigned meal plan (as allowed per class year) through the tenth business day of the semester via the ID Card Portal. Meal plans cannot be changed after the tenth day of each semester unless a student is released from traditional residence hall housing or withdraws from the University.
Traditional residence hall students are required to be on a meal plan. Any student with a special diet or medical condition must seek accommodation from the campus dietitian. In the unlikely event that UAlbany Dining cannot meet those dietary needs, a student in traditional residence hall housing must seek a release from traditional housing.
If a student is officially released from traditional residence hall housing during the first eight weeks of a semester, but has not withdrawn from the University, their meal plan will be automatically dropped unless they notify the ID Card Office that they want to maintain their plan. If any Discount Dollars have been voluntarily added, the remaining balance of the added on Discount Dollars will be automatically converted to Munch Money which is not discounted but is tax-free and non-refundable.
A student may also elect to change to their meal plan when they are released from traditional residence hall housing but not withdrawing from the University by contacting the ID Card Office. If any Discount Dollars have been voluntarily added, and the student changes to a plan that is ineligible for add on Discount Dollars, the remaining balance of the added on Discount Dollars will be automatically converted to Munch Money, which is not discounted but is tax-free and non-refundable.
B. UAlbany University Apartment and Commuter Students
University apartment and commuter students are not required to purchase a meal plan, but can add a meal plan of their choice. Unlike traditional residence hall students, University apartment and commuter students must add a meal plan selection every semester; there is no automatic re-assignment for these students.
University apartment and commuter students may add or change their meal plan through the tenth business day of the semester via the ID Card Portal. After the tenth day of each semester, meal plans may be purchased in the ID Card Office.
If any Discount Dollars have been voluntarily added, and the student changes to a plan that is ineligible for add-on Discount Dollars, the remaining balance of the added Discount Dollars will be automatically converted to Munch Money, which is not discounted but is tax-free and non-refundable.
Meal plans cannot be canceled after the tenth day of each semester unless a student withdraws from the University. Any student with a special diet or medical condition must seek accommodation from the campus dietitian. In the unlikely event that UAlbany Dining cannot meet those dietary needs, a University apartment or commuter student must seek a special circumstances release from the meal plan.
Meal Plan Refunds
Please refer to the Housing License (Section XIV, B) for detailed meal plan refund and billing adjustment information, even if your meal plan is voluntary.
If you have any further questions and/or you are unsatisfied with the results of the process outlined above, please contact UAS at 518-442-7525.
Discount Dollars Usage Guide
Use your meal plan budget guide to stay on track with managing your Discount Dollars. Learn more about Discount Dollars and other campus funds.
Use the guide to compare your spending habits on a week-by-week basis with the money available on your chosen meal plan. This should help you assess whether you will run out of money, have too much money or just enough before the end of the semester!
Keep in mind that each student has different eating habits, and where you choose to eat daily has a great impact on how much Discount Dollars you will spend. Hence, the number of Discount Dollars you will need may differ from the average number calculated on the budget guide. The guide is calculated using the start of the semester until the last day of finals.
Up to $500 more in Discount Dollars can be purchased at any time during the semester if on a myFlex or myUnlimited Meal Plan. No additional base cost is deducted for additional Discount Dollars. Discount Dollars carry over from fall semester to spring semester but expire at the end of spring semester.
To add or change your meal plan, or to deposit funds, log into the ID Card Portal with your NetID and password.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my meal plan last for a semester or the full year?
Meal plans are purchased each semester. In the spring semester, resident students will automatically be assigned the same meal plan they had in the fall but can change during the designated add/change period.
University Apartment and commuter students are not auto-assigned the same meal plan, but may sign up for a meal plan every semester. Learn more about budgeting your Discount Dollars for the semester.
Does the myUnlimited Meal Plan also follow the myFlex and myChoice model?
The myUnlimited Meal Plan will allow for unlimited meal swipes during every scheduled meal period / seven days a week. The plan also includes Discount Dollars. The myUnlimited students can use Discount Dollars at all retail locations and receive a 40% discount.
Why do I have to pay a base cost with the myFlex and myChoice Meal Plan model?
The base cost covers utilities, maintenance, repairs, rent, and the labor needed to support the food service program. These costs have always been components of the total meal plan prices; we are just being more transparent about the costs and breaking it down so you can see how your Discount Dollars are calculated.
Once you pay the base cost, you get the remaining amount in Discount Dollars. With Discount Dollars, you get discounts which are activated at resident and retail dining locations (60% or 40% depending on the location) when you use your meal plan.
MyFlex Meal Plan students can add more Discount Dollars (up to $500) without paying anymore base cost. Since myChoice is a minor meal plan for nonresident students only and at a lower base rate, additional Discount Dollars cannot be purchased.
What are Discount Dollars and how do I use them?
Discount Dollars are part of your chosen plan and are set up as a declining balance account on your ID card. Discount Dollars are like Munch Money, but Munch Money does not activate the deep discounts at dining locations, and Munch Money does not come with a meal plan (Munch Money can be added separately, if desired).
You use your Discount Dollars at all retail and resident dining locations for meals and beverages. Each time you use your ID card at a dining location, your meal plan’s Discount Dollars will get activated and the venue-specific discount (60% discount at all resident dining rooms [myFlex and myChoice only], a 40% discount at campus/Sodexo retail brands) will be automatically calculated and the balance will be debited for your purchase.
Your Discount Dollars’ remaining balance will appear on the register display and your receipt. Remember also your meal plan is tax free, so you will also be saving an additional 8% on all discounted sale prices. Please note only Discount Dollars activate the 60% and 40% discounts, other campus funds will not (i.e., Munch Money, Podium, Campus Gold, F/S Dining Plan).
Learn more about budgeting your Discount Dollars for the semester.
What is the difference between Discount Dollars and Munch Money?
Discount Dollars come with your meal plan (myFlex and myChoice). By having Discount Dollars, you ‘unlock’ the deep discounts at all the dining locations (a 60% discount at all resident dining rooms [myFlex and myChoice plans only], a 40% discount at campus/Sodexo retail brands).
Up to $500 more Discount Dollars can be purchased each semester with a myUnlimited or myFlex Meal Plan. No additional Discount Dollars can be purchased with a myChoice Meal Plan. Lastly, Discount Dollars cannot be purchased outside of purchasing a myUnlimited and myFlex Meal Plan.
Munch Money is optional and does not come with your meal plan. You can add tax-free Munch Money to make purchases at 518 Market or in vending machines (i.e., locations that do not activate discounts with Discount Dollars).
A Podium account can also be used for these purchases, but Podium does not provide tax-free spending.
A meal plan is not required to purchase Munch Money. You can add as much Munch Money as you want per semester, but a minimum of $25 is necessary to start an account.
Both Discount Dollars and Munch Money carry over from fall to spring semester but expire at the end of the spring semester.
If I have Discount Dollars, why would I need Munch Money or Podium on my card?
The main reason to add a Munch Money account is to make tax-free food-related purchases at places that do not activate a discount, i.e., vending machines and 518 Market. A Podium account can also be used for these purchases, but Podium does not provide tax-free spending.
We strongly suggest you add either Munch Money or Podium for vending or 518 Market purchases. You do not want to waste your Discount Dollars on purchases that do not activate a discount. You can also pay with credit at these locations.
How do I avoid using my Discount Dollars in vending and for pre-packaged goods?
You should never use your Discount Dollars for purchases that do not activate discounts, i.e., vending and prepacked goods. You need to go on the ID Card Portal and add either Munch Money or Podium dollars. Or, you can pay for these purchases with cash or a credit card.
When you use your ID card in the vending machines, the machines are programmed to look for Munch Money first, then Podium, and lastly Discount Dollars.
When buying pre-packed goods in retail (e.g., 518 Market), the cashiers are trained to ask you what tender you want to use so you can avoid using Discount Dollars on non-discounted items.
Can I convert Munch Money into Discount Dollars or vice versa?
No, Discount Dollars only come with a purchased meal plan and more can be added (up to $500) on the myFlex plans. Munch Money is an optional tax-free account you can add to your ID card if you want to purchase items at 518 Market or in vending machines. Podium Dollars can also be used to purchase items in 518 Market and vending, but Podium is not tax free like Munch Money.
Since deep discounts are offered with the meal plan, have menu prices been increased to make up the difference? No! The base cost covers the operating costs. All menu pricing is carefully reviewed on a yearly basis and compared to local, regional and national pricing. Rest assured, no pricings will be adjusted to counteract the discounts! That’s what makes the myMeal Plans so cost-effective and fun to have!
Are there limits to locations that I can use my Discount Dollars at?
No limits! You can use Discount Dollars at any dining location during its hours of operation and you can purchase whatever menu item(s) you want!
How do I get the discounts when I use my meal plan?
Once you purchase a meal plan, you just need to order your food/beverage in retail or swipe into a dining room, the venue-specific discount will automatically be calculated and the purchase price will be debited from your balance on your ID card.
Can I add Discount Dollars to my plan if I run out?
You can add up to $500 more in Discount Dollars per semester to your myFlex or myUnlimited plan. Additional Discount Dollars cannot be added to a myChoice plan.
If I add more Discount Dollars to my plan, do I have to pay more base cost?
No, the base cost is completely covered by the initial meal plan purchase price. When you purchase more Discount Dollars (up to $500 per semester), you will have the full amount of added Discount Dollars to spend.
Is there still a fixed amount of meal swipes on myFlex and myChoice meal plans?
No, there are no more fixed amount of resident dining meal swipes with the myFlex and myChoice plans. If you have one of these plans and want to eat at a resident dining room, it will be 60% off the door price (you pay $5.06 as opposed to $12.65 and no tax!). The myUnlimited plan will allow scheduled meal period access to the resident dining rooms.
Who is eligible to purchase the myUnlimited Meal Plan?
All resident students, University apartment students, and commuter students can purchase the myUnlimited Meal Plan. UAlbany freshmen living in resident halls are required to have a myUnlimited Meal Plan. The myUnlimited Meal Plan #1 will be automatically assigned to resident freshmen but can be changed to the #2 up until 10 business days after the start of the semester.
Who is eligible to purchase the myFlex Meal Plan?
UAlbany non-freshmen resident, traditional housing residents, University apartment residents and commuter students can purchase a myFlex Meal Plan.
UAlbany non-freshmen living in resident halls are required to purchase a myFlex but will automatically be assigned the myFlex Meal Plan #2.
Resident non-freshmen can change this plan to any other myFlex Meal Plan option (#1 to #5) up until 10 business days after the start of the semester.
Who is eligible to purchase the myChoice Meal Plan?
Only University apartment residents and commuter students can purchase a myChoice Meal Plan, and no additional Discount Dollars can be added to this meal plan.
This is considered a minor meal plan. It is meant for students that do not live in resident halls and who have kitchens at home or in their apartment. It just gives them an opportunity to explore campus dining.
University apartment residents and commuter students can change their myChoice Meal Plan up until 10 business days after the start of the semester.
I'm a University apartment resident. Is there a reason I should choose myFlex over myChoice?
The myChoice plan is considered a minor, exploratory plan. It is less expensive than the myFlex Meal Plan, but additional Discount Dollars can’t be added and only one myChoice Meal Plan can be purchased per semester. If you plan to eat on campus two to three times a week, a myFlex Meal Plan may be a better choice.
I am a non-freshmen resident student trying to choose the right meal plan. What are the main differences between the myUnlimited Plan and the myFlex Plan?
The myUnlimited Meal Plan will allow scheduled meal period access to the dining rooms and a small amount of Discount Dollars (more can be added). If you plan to eat more frequently at resident dining rooms, this plan would be the right one for you. If you plan to eat mostly at retail locations, then a myFlex Meal Plan would be more suitable.
How do I purchase a meal plan?
During the first two weeks of each semester, log into ID Card Portal with your NetID and password. After the tenth day of classes, please email [email protected].
Can I change my chosen meal plan?
Yes, you can change a meal plan up until 10 business days after the start of the semester.
Please note that all resident hall students are required to be on a meal plan. Freshmen living in a resident hall are required to have a myUnlimited Meal Plan. The myUnlimited Meal Plan #1 will be automatically assigned to resident freshmen but can be changed to the #2 up until 10 business days after the start of the semester.
Non-freshmen living in resident halls are required to purchase one of the five myFlex plans but will automatically be assigned the myFlex Meal Plan #2. Resident non-freshmen can change this plan to any other myFlex Meal Plan option (#1 to #5).
Can my meal plan be cancelled or refunded?
Please refer to the Meal Plan Terms & Conditions.
Do my Discount Dollars carry over to the next semester?
Discount Dollars carry over from fall semester to spring semester but expire at the end of spring semester.
Do I lose my Discount Dollars from the fall semester if I don't purchase a meal plan in the spring semester?
No, you get to keep all your Discount Dollars until the end of the spring semester, then they will expire if unused.
