Register Now — State-of-the-Science and the Future of Cumulative Impact Assessment: Report Release Webinar

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) and UAlbany's Center for the Elimination of Health Disparities (CEHD) invite you to a webinar to discuss the upcoming consensus study report, State-of-the-Science and the Future of Cumulative Impact Assessment, which the National Academies will release to the public at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, October 9, 2025. Register to attend.

In response to a request from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Academies established an ad hoc committee tasked with advancing the science of cumulative impact assessment. CEHD's Associate Director for Operations and Research Dr. Mia V. Gallo was invited to work on this project as a committee member. CEHD Director Dr. Elizabeth Vásquez helped the committee accomplish its charge as part of the community and tribal liaison group.

Every community across the United States faces impacts on their health and well-being, such as pollution of air, water and soil and extreme events such as wildfires and major storms. Stressors such as poverty, limited access to healthcare and unemployment can heighten effects of these impacts on communities. On the other hand, community resources that promote health and well-being can lessen them.

Cumulative impact assessment is a tool to help environmental and other relevant decision-makers consider these multiple factors in evaluating priorities and potential changes in policies or regulations, with a focus on improving health and well-being. This National Academies report provides advice on the state of the science of cumulative impact assessment and case examples to foster application at community, tribal, regional, state and national levels.

To inform its work, the committee convened several workshops. Summaries of these public events were published separately. Review the proceedings of a workshop series and the proceedings of a workshop in brief.

The webinar will be available to attend via livestream on the event webpage. Please register today to receive updates as they are made available.
