UAlbany Ranked One of New York State’s Top Colleges by Washington Monthly

ALBANY, N.Y. (Aug. 29, 2025) — The University at Albany continues to be recognized as one of New York State’s top colleges, renowned for its contributions to the public good, according to Washington Monthly’s annual College Guide and Rankings. UAlbany was ranked first among SUNY campuses, No. 7 among New York State institutions and No. 78 nationwide.
Washington Monthly reviewed more than 1,400 colleges and universities nationwide and UAlbany earned top marks in four areas: access, affordability, outcomes and service.
“This ranking is a powerful affirmation of the University at Albany’s mission to serve as an engine of opportunity for our students and a force for public good. From supporting student success, to using research to tackle society’s biggest challenges, to serving as a community anchor, UAlbany is unleashing greatness on our campus and across New York,” said Havidán Rodríguez, president of the University at Albany.
The University was also listed in the top 40 of the 2025 Best Bang for the Buck Rankings: Northeast, Washington Monthly’s regional list that highlights how institutions help students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.
The rankings reflect UAlbany’s national reputation for research with real-world impact. The University offers students substantial access to STEM research, affordable degree programs and experiential learning opportunities, while advancing discovery in areas such as semiconductor design, artificial intelligence, climate and environmental sciences, social and health equity, drug discovery and cybersecurity.
Widely considered one of the most diverse Research 1 institutions in the nation, the University consistently ranks among the top institutions and has been recognized by U. S. News and World Report, the Wall Street Journal, Princeton Review and others.
