Overview

This webinar is designed to enable providers to improve their ability to enable NICU parents to meet their personal goals for provision of mothers’ own milk (MOM) to infants during and after the NICU hospitalization. The evidenced based content includes: 1) comparing and contrasting the evidence for MOM versus donor milk (DHM), introduction of the PROVIDE Compendium of resources and tools as a framework for engaging NICU families in the science of MOM and for standardizing communication and messaging, reducing disparities in the receipt of MOM at NICU discharge for black infants, and improving the transition from NICU to home.

As a result of participation in this activity, the learner will have increased and enhanced their knowledge and competence on the science of Mothers Own Milk for NICU families.

By the end of the activity, learners will be able to: 

  • Integrate components of the PROVIDE compendium, an evidence-based collection of videos and information sheets about MOM provision in the NICU, into routine NICU care.
  • Describe My Personal Pumping Pathway, a two-part, evidence-based instrument to guide breast pump use and lactation care for breast-pump-dependent mothers with NICU infants.
  • Identify strategies to monitor and mitigate Black/non-Black disparities in receipt of MOM at NICU discharge.
  • Plan the transition to breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding during the NICU stay.
