UAlbany Remembers Alumni on 25th Anniversary of 9/11

ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2026) — The University at Albany held a remembrance Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and honor 19 alumni who lost their lives. Members of the campus community gathered to reflect on the lasting impact of that day on the Great Dane community.

The event, hosted by University at Albany Alumni Association President and 2011 UAlbany alum Joe Bonilla, was held at the University's 9/11 memorial bench located behind the Boor Sculpture Studio on the Uptown Campus. Dozens of faculty, staff and students attended the ceremony, which ended with attendees placing flowers on the memorial. Also in attendance was Edward McGlone ’11, part of a group of students and staff who supported the creation of the memorial, which was dedicated in 2021. 

The granite bench, designed by alum Dan Grioux, features symbolic elements, including two rectangular towers that connect to a pentagon-shaped base. The memorial serves as a permanent place where generations of Great Danes can gather to reflect on the lives and legacies of our alumni.
