ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2026) — The University at Albany was recently ranked No. 40 nationally and second among New York public universities in AIREDEX’s AI Readiness Index, while also earning strong placements in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
AIREDEX’s AI Readiness Index evaluates how well colleges and universities are preparing undergraduate students for a workforce increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. The ranking considers institutional commitment to AI, the integration of AI across the curriculum, industry partnerships and the depth and accessibility of AI research.
The recognition comes as UAlbany continues to expand its work in artificial intelligence through AI Plus, a University-wide initiative designed to integrate teaching and learning about AI across academic disciplines, as well as through the AI & Society College and UAlbany’s participation in the Empire AI consortium.
UAlbany programs also earned strong marks in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, which evaluated universities across 57 academic subjects spanning the natural sciences, life sciences, medical sciences, social sciences and engineering. Its methodology draws on indicators including faculty achievement, international collaboration, research output, research quality and research impact. Subjects recognized in rankings among U. S. institutions include:
- Public administration — No. 12
- Atmospheric science — No. 26
- Law — No. 43–57
- Sociology — No. 48–67
- Psychology — No. 54–65
- Public health — No. 62–88
- Communication — No. 62–74
- Earth sciences — No. 78–106
- Political sciences — No. 84–112
- Education — No. 94–125
The rankings reflect UAlbany’s academic quality, research, affordability and student success and comes as the University welcomed its largest incoming class in history this fall. Earlier this year, ShanghaiRanking placed UAlbany in the 501–600 band in its Academic Ranking of World Universities, while U.S. News & World Report ranked the University No. 58 among public universities nationally in its 2026 Best Colleges list.
