ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2026) — The University at Albany is moving forward with a comprehensive renovation of its Physical Education Building after securing funding for the next phase of the project. The improvements, which began in 2022, represent a significant investment in UAlbany’s facilities designed to support athletics, recreation and wellness activities and serve the campus community for years to come.

The project includes a $76 million rehabilitation of the basement and the first floor of the building. More than 102,000 square feet will be redesigned to create modern, flexible spaces to support student fitness, recreation and athletic rooms, including:

  • A new Nutrition Center located on concourse level
  • A permanent space for Sport Medicine
  • A 23,000 square-foot fitness center housed in the former pool area
  • Updated locker rooms

Construction will begin Dec. 18 and is expected to be completed in Summer 2030.

The Broadview Fitness Center will close at the end of the fall semester to accommodate the work. The University is currently expanding and improving the Indigenous Quad Fitness Center in the basement of Mohawk Tower, which students can use during construction. The Well at Colonial — the University's 26,000 square-foot recreation and wellness center that opened in 2024 — also offers students a functional fitness studio, in addition to a cycling studio, group exercise studio, mind & body studio, cardio area, combative mat room and more.

Equipment from Broadview will be transferred to Indigenous Quad and operating hours will match Broadview’s schedule. The expansion and equipment transfer will help maintain access to fitness resources for students while work proceeds in the PE Building. Beginning in January, Indigenous Quad Fitness Center will also be accessible to undergraduate students who live on and off campus, graduate students with a Recreation and Wellness membership and faculty and staff.

Phase II of the renovation will focus on renovations to the second and third floors of the building once funding has been secured.

The initial phase of the Physical Education Building renovation, completed in 2024, updated practice space, rehabilitated the gymnasium, installed a new athletic floor, added retractable bleachers and upgraded the sound and scoreboard systems, wall padding and other athletics and recreation amenities. Work in the former pool area included asbestos abatement, removal of pool equipment and filtration systems, and filling the pool basin with a new structural slab to support future recreation space. The pool infill was completed in August 2022.

Broadview Center underwent a separate major renovation of its arena, which was completed in 2023.

A member of the Health Promoting Campuses Network guided by the Okanagan Charter, the University is dedicated to fostering an environment that supports students, faculty and staff. Recently selected for The Princeton Review’s Mental Health Honor Roll for the second year in a row, the University also launched Thrive UAlbany in January. The campus-wide wellness initiative that brings together resources that help students stay well, feel connected, and prepare for what comes next.
