Learning for Life: Emeritus Center Launches New Institute

ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2025) — The new Albany Lifelong Learning Institute (ALLI) is launching this spring, with continuing education courses geared toward older adults.
Sponsored by the University at Albany’s William L. Reese II PhD Emeritus Center, ALLI officially opens mid-March with three, in-person courses to be held at ETEC. In the future, the Emeritus Center plans to add hybrid courses that meet both in person and via Zoom, to attract participants from a wider area.
ALLI (pronounced “ally”) is designed for emeriti, alumni and the greater community, both for education and camaraderie, as evidenced by its motto: “Your ALLI for continued learning and social engagement.” Most courses will be taught by current and retired UAlbany faculty.
"The demographic trends show the percentage of older adults is growing very rapidly. Members of this group are demanding more continued education and social engagement opportunities,” said Jim Van Voorst, UAlbany’s former vice president for finance and administration and the current president of the Emeritus Center. “We are delighted to be working in collaboration with our community partners, including AARP and the Albany Guardian Society, and other parts of the University including the Center for Healthy Aging and the College of Integrated Health Sciences, on this new project."
Classes will be held at ETEC, Room 203, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The first three classes, which run for six weeks each, are:
- “Aging Well: Living Well into Your 80s and Beyond” taught by Yuchi Young, associate professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Behavior; College of Integrated Health Sciences.
- “The Controversial Insanity Defense in American History” taught by Richard F. Hamm, distinguished teaching professor, Department of History, College of Arts & Sciences.
- “Neo-Victorian Fiction (1966-2023)” taught by Randall Craig, professor emeritus, Department of English, College of Arts & Sciences.
Cost is $60 for each course, and registration includes free parking. For more information or to register, visit the ALLI webpage.
