ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2024) — The University at Albany is extending the deadline for first-year students to submit an enrollment deposit to June 1 as the U.S. Education Department anticipates delays with federal financial aid applications.

The University recently learned that the Department is expecting additional delays of up to six weeks in processing and sending information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to colleges and universities.

As students may need to receive and consider financial aid offers before making a final enrollment decision for Fall 2024, UAlbany understands that its traditional May 1 deposit deadline could pose constraints for students and families and believes an extension will allow students to make the best possible decisions for their education.

“At UAlbany, we are committed to providing our students with resources and offering life-changing educational opportunities for all,” said Michael Christakis, vice president for student affairs. “Providing additional time to make their college choice helps students and their families fully consider their financial aid package and ensure that attending college remains accessible and affordable.”

The new deadline of June 1 applies to full-time, first year (freshman) students, including those who may not be applying for financial aid. In addition, the deadline for requesting a refund will also be extended to June 1 for those who have already submitted a deposit or are planning to.

The University will work with students who are unable to make the June 1 deadline on a case-by-case basis.

Any additional delays from the Education Department or changes to policy and timing will be communicated as the University is made aware. Students and families who have questions should visit the Admissions website or contact [email protected].
