Geography and Planning student received multiple awards at national and departmental levels

Andrew Kim, a student in the BA/MA combined degree program in Geography, has won two awards at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) in New Orleans on April 12th. Andrew presented his research paper titled “Visual Variables on Mobile Devices: An Empirical Study of Their Roles in Gaining Spatial Awareness”. He received the Best Paper Award in the Honors Student Paper Competition organized by the Cartography specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. His presentation on this research paper also granted him a Travel Award awarded by the Environmental Perception and Behavioral Geography special Group of the American Association of Geographers.

The Department of Geography and Planning just announced Andrew will be awarded the David Mark Prize. This award honors David Mark, a Geography MA student who tragically passed away in March 2011, less than three months after receiving his Master’s Degree. It is awarded to a Geography Graduate Student to honor David’s passion for his studies and who strongly shares the work ethic and breadth of attainment in the discipline of Geography.

Andrew is in his final semester before graduating this Spring. He works with his advisor Assistant Professor Rui Li in studies addressing human wayfinding behaviors and the design of geospatial system to enhance spatial orientation.
