Research Interests

My primary research is on tropical cyclones (hurricanes), including how they form and what causes them to change in intensity. I am interested in how cloud clusters organize into tropical cyclones, how vertical wind shear weakens tropical cyclones, how tropical cyclones rapidly intensify and how midlatitude weather systems interact with tropical cyclones.

My other research is on severe weather and their hazards, focusing on the northeastern U.S. I am interested in how terrain influences severe thunderstorms and how well weather models represent these influences.

I am also interested in understanding meteorological factors that can change the risk of severe weather events, including large hail and heavy rainfall.
