Center for Biophotonic Technology and Artificial Intelligence (CeBAI)

Advancing Optical Technologies for Medical & Forensic Applications

The Center for Biophotonic Technology and Artificial Intelligence (CeBAI) brings together photonic technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop innovative solutions for medicine and forensics, and to accelerate their path to market.

The Center’s areas of focus include:

  • Advanced Biophotonics: Revolutionizing diagnostics for neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases and other medical conditions.
  • Forensics & Security: Developing new photonic solutions for forensic science and security applications.
  • Integrated Photonics: Pioneering research in the integrated photonic systems to drive innovation across industries.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML): Utilizing AI and ML to enhance photonic technologies and push the boundaries of their applications.

CeBAI's novel instrumentation — including Raman spectroscopy capabilities, a laser-based technique that can identify and characterize materials — supports our collaborative research and development projects.

A Partnership of Global Researchers

CeBAI was jointly initiated by the University at Albany and the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology in Jena, Germany, in June 2022.

The Institute for Molecular Science and Fusion Technology at Kangwon National University in Gangwon, South Korea, joined the venture in October 2024.
