Dr. Amy Nitza, Director of the Global Center for AI in Mental Health (GCAIMH) at the University at Albany, was recently featured on The Engagement Ring podcast in an episode titled “Expanding Access to Mental Health Diagnosis and Treatment Through AI.” In this conversation with host Mary Hunt, Dr. Nitza provided an in-depth discussion of the mission, interdisciplinary approach, and research priorities of GCAIMH, a collaborative research initiative focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance access to mental health diagnosis and treatment, particularly among underserved populations.

During the episode, Dr. Nitza articulated the center’s commitment to developing AI-based tools that augment mental health care delivery and support clinicians’ ability to implement evidence-based practices. She emphasized the importance of ethical and responsible AI deployment, clarifying that such tools are designed to support—not replace—human clinical judgment. Dr. Nitza also highlighted the center’s collaborative framework, which brings together expertise from the University at Albany, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, and international partners to innovate in areas such as clinician training, disaster response mental health support, and global mental health equity.

This podcast appearance offers valuable insights into how artificial intelligence can be harnessed to address critical gaps in mental health care infrastructure and deepen understanding of both the possibilities and limitations of emerging technologies in clinical practice.

ISHE continues to support and amplify research that advances health equity and interdisciplinary solutions to complex societal challenges.
