International Studies Minor

About the International Studies Minor

Are you curious about how cultures and languages intersect, how societies solve problems, how one nation’s path of development shapes their neighbors’, and how you can make a difference? Then the International Studies Minor might be the right fit for your interests and aspirations.

The International Studies Minor requires 18 credits, nine of which must be upper-level (300-400). You can use up to 12 credits from studying abroad through UAlbany or another SUNY institution, so why not travel? International Studies is the easiest and most effective way to document your study abroad credits.

Choose from two tracks:

  • International Development Studies: This highly interdisciplinary concentration approaches development in the broadest possible sense, including multiple perspectives from a wide array of academic departments. It’s an excellent fit for students preparing for a career in international affairs — whether they plan on working in government, across governments or with NGOs and non-profits.
  • Social and Cultural Area Studies: This highly flexible, customizable concentration requires at least six study abroad credits and can make use of language courses. It’s an excellent fit for students whose interests in international studies aren't limited to a single region or language. Besides a few core course options in anthropology, linguistics, sociology and women's studies, students chart their own path with the help of their advisor.

With approval, study abroad, transfer and Advanced Placement (high school) courses, as well as alternative UAlbany courses, can be substituted for pre-approved courses in the two tracks. For detailed information on the minor's requirements and tracks, please consult the Undergraduate Bulletin.
