Autumn 2024 ISHE Newsletter

Welcome to the Institute for Social and Health Equity (ISHE)

The University at Albany's Institute for Social and Health Equity (ISHE) is an interdisciplinary research hub designed to leverage UAlbany’s research strengths in health and health disparities, community engagement, and addressing societal inequities in the Capital Region, New York, the U.S., and beyond.

ISHE, A Research Hub

ISHE unites several centers to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research: the Center for Healthy Aging (CHA), the Global Center for AI in Mental Health (GCAIMH), the Center for Social and Demographic Analysis, and the Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities (CEMHD).

Leveraging our partnership with the AI+ Institute, we are advancing innovative solutions to the most pressing health and social issues of our time.

Launch of ISHE

ISHE’s launch in February of 2024 featured invited guest speakers including Adam Gamoran, President of the William T. Grant Foundation; NYS Department of Health Commissioner James McDonald; UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez; VP for Research and Economic Development Thenkurussi (Kesh) Kesavadas; and ISHE Director Paul Morgan. Among the over 110 attendees were representatives from the NYS DOH Office of Health Equity and Human Rights, the NYS Office of Youth Justice and the NYS Office of Justice Research and Policy.

If you have an idea or project in mind but are unsure of the next steps, email us at [email protected]. Our team specializes in connecting researchers with resources and funding opportunities.

The grant development process can be time-consuming and competitive. It's essential to start early, be organized, and tailor your proposals to the specific requirements of each funding opportunity.

ISHE is here to help every step of the way. We work with you to refine your project idea; identify funding opportunities that match your project; find potential collaborators; and give you feedback to develop a competitive proposal. In addition to keeping track of all requirements and deadlines, we design graphs and figures to add visual aid to the proposal and help compose the budget and its justification. Post-award, the ISHE team is here to manage the grant including implementation, reporting, compliance, recruitment, budgeting and project management.

A graphic on a purple background shows a five-step staircase labeled: 1. Idea Generation, 2. Collaboration Search, 3. Funding Opportunity Match, 4. Grant Development and Budget Support, 5. Project Launch and Post Award Administration. A yellow stick figure walks up, followed by an arrow, symbolizing progression and success.

Our step-by-step guide above outlines the essential stages to help you turn your idea into a successfully funded project. From generating your initial idea to launching your research, ISHE provides the support and resources you need every step of the way.

ISHE Road Shows

The ISHE team recently attended and presented on the support services it offers to faculty members at the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Integrated Health Sciences. These events were an opportunity to learn about the impactful work being done at ISHE, meet and engage with the team, and discover how ISHE is addressing social and health disparities by brining collaborative interdisciplinary teams together to submit innovative projects. Reach out if you’d like the ISHE team to attend your next faculty meeting. We’re here to help!
