ISHE Research Roundtable: Working Memory and Math in Early Childhood

Zoom Event scheduled Feb. 13, 2025 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Dr. Miller-Cotto is a scholar in educational equity in the U.S. focused on interpreting minoritized students’ performance on assessments, the co-development and measurement of cognitive processes and math skills, and applying cognitive science to improve instructional materials for struggling students.
In her presentation, Miller-Cotto delves into the critical link between executive function, particularly working memory, and mathematics development. Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study – Kindergarten (ECLS-K), she will highlight how working memory influences math performance from kindergarten to third grade.
The presentation will include insights from her latest project on working memory's role in fraction magnitude comparisons for third graders. Additionally, she will explore innovative approaches to learning material design and the measurement of self-regulatory processes, addressing key challenges like racial disparities in education.
