About

Angeleek Johnson grew up in Brooklyn in a low-income single parent household and watched much of her family struggle due to lack of education. She knew she wanted something different for herself. Ms. Johnson attended SUNY Cortland College as an EOP student and first-generation college student, earning her bachelor's in English, philosophy and women’s studies. For her graduate education, she attended Buffalo State College and earned a master's degree in higher education and student affairs with a concentration in counseling in 2014. She started her career at the University at Albany as a Resident Director on State and Indigenous Quads in 2015, and later transitioned into the EOP Counselor position in 2018.

Since her time at UAlbany, she has served and supported students at various capacities. She has advised numerous student groups, including the Residence Hall Association, Embrace Thy Curls, Fostering Leaders of Our World and Iota Phi Theta Inc., showing students the importance of scholarship and leadership on and off campus. In her counselor role, she guides EOP scholars in their personal, academic and professional pursuits. She teaches the Freshmen and Sophomore Year Experience courses, which help students acclimate to college and prepare for their desired careers.

Additionally, she works with the foster scholars in the program. She provides resources for their financial academic, and mental health needs. She also collaborates with faculty from the School of Social Welfare to conduct research on capturing the foster scholar experience in college. This research is used to educate and advocate for better support services. Currently, Ms. Johnson serves on a task force of dedicated administrators addressing the needs of foster scholars and studying how the institution can improve policies and services to this group on campus.
