Funding & Awards for Students

CURCE and the University at Albany offers Undergraduate students a variety of funding to support, advance, and recognize their engagement in research, scholarship, and creative activities.  We encourage you to promote the below opportunities to your students.

Federal Work Study for Undergraduate Research Assistants

Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student's course of study - including engaging in and supporting the research culture and enterprise at the University at Albany.

Faculty, Researchers and PI's can request Work-Study positions for the 2021-2022 Academic Year, or just for specific semesters (Fall or Spring)

  • If you have not previously supervised a Federal Work-Study position, please first contact the Administrative Manager, Assistant to the Chair, or other similar departmental role. This individual will assist you in completing the necessary FWS Request forms
    • If you are unsure who within your department can assist you, please email Dina Holmes, Work Study Director via email at [email protected]
  • Once your request is approved, you will be given access to the Student Employment website to post the position

Tips for Posting your Position:

  • Students eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program are paid $13.00/hour for approximately six hours/week during the academic semester(s).
  • Provide a Position Title that is descriptive of the anticipated role 
    • Examples: Student Assistant, Research Assistant, Office Support, etc.
  • Draft a Job Description that outlines the anticipated role, responsibilities, and tasks for the student
    • Ideas include: material preparations, literature review, journal article searches, cataloging materials/artifacts, etc.
    • If you are unsure, email the CURCE team for support
  • List any requirements a student must have met to be considered for the position including GPA, course work, interests, previous experiences, etc.
  • Check the status of your job posting regularly, and interview any student applicants

Situation Prize for Research: Open to all UAlbany undergraduates actively engaged in a research or creative project are eligible to apply for this student excellence award donated by Damian Bazadona '98.

Sorrell Chesin Research Award: Open to Juniors and Seniors engaged in faculty mentored research within the Life Sciences.  The award was established by Sorrell Chesin to encourage and recognize full-time undergraduate student participation in research.

Presidential Award for Undergraduate Research: Each spring semester, CURCE oversees the institutions application and nomination process for undergraduate students to receive the Presidential Award for Undergraduate Research.

The process for the 2020-2021 has completed. The process for 2021-2022 will be available in December 2021.
