As a historian of modern Korea, Professor Kwon’s research focuses on military-civilian relations in the course of South Korea’s military modernization and the interface of these dynamics with political, cultural, industrial, and socioeconomic development in South Korea from the 1970s onwards. His broader interests include relations between authoritarian politics and civil society in East Asia, the legacy of military regimes in Korea’s postwar industrial and cultural transformations, comparative studies of Korean and Japanese industrialization in the postwar era, Korean nationalism, and the prospects for Korean reunification, as well as Christianity and social movements.
