Required Research Ethics and Compliance Training

As a prerequisite for conducting certain types of research activities, researchers (including staff, students, postdocs and others) must complete required ethics and compliance training courses:

Specific Curriculum Requirements:

If you will conduct research with human participants: IRB – Human Subjects Research Required Training

If you plan to use animals in research or teaching: IACUC – Use of Animals Training

If you will submit annual financial conflicts of interest certification: COI – Conflicts of Interest Training

Ethics and Compliance training is provided via the online Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) system.

CITI Training Registration and Curriculum Setup Instructions

The University at Albany offers research ethics and compliance training to faculty, staff and students through the online. Investigators create and manage their own accounts, training curriculum, and course completion records. Follow the instructions below to get started.

To register for a new CITI Training account (if you have an existing account that's affiliated with another organization, skip to next section):

  1. Go to www.citiprogram.org and click Register to create an account.
  2. Under Select Your Organization Affiliation, in the Search for Organization box, enter: SUNY - University at Albany.
  3. Follow the registration instructions, entering your University at Albany email address in the required field. You will have the option to add a second email address. Upon completing registration, you will be directed to the Main Menu/My Courses page.

To affiliate an existing CITI Training account with the University at Albany:

  1. Go to www.citiprogram.org to log in to your account.
  2. From Main Menu/My Courses page, at the bottom of the page, click Affiliate with Another Institution.
  3. Under Select Your Organization Affiliation, in the Search for Organization box, enter: SUNY - University at Albany.
  4. Follow the registration instructions, entering your University at Albany email address in the required field. You will have the option to add a second email address. Upon completing registration, you will be directed to the Main Menu/My Courses page.

To add courses to your CITI Training curriculum:

  1. From Main Menu/My Courses page, under the heading My Learner Tools for SUNY - University at Albany, click Add a Course.
  2. Answer the setup questionnaire to select the course(s) you require.
  3. Click Submit. The selected course(s) will now appear in your course list on the Main Menu/My Courses page.
  4. Click on the course name to begin the course.
  5. Save copies of your course completion records as documentation of your training(s).
