GIS certificate courses give you first-hand experience using geospatial technologies along with associated artificial intelligence techniques and big data analysis to retrieve and process geographic information and present it in digital maps as well as other visual formats.

The five-course curriculum teaches you how to use geographic mapping technologies to:

  • Respond to urban emergencies
  • Track environmental change
  • Predict natural disasters
  • Identify emerging social issues
  • Study socioeconomic and market trends

By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to support mapping projects in natural resource management, agriculture, archeology, environmental protection, forestry, or urban planning.

To be admitted to the GIS certificate program, you must demonstrate your interest in using geographic data to support academic or professional work in social sciences, environmental studies, market research, or urban and regional planning.

    • Develop proficiency in each of the following:  cartography, GIS, remote sensing, and statistical analysis.
    • Gain knowledge of varied advanced applications of these methods in fields such as environmental, urban, and land use analysis; planning; and resource applications.
    • Qualified students are encouraged to participate in advanced internship and practical experiences, including contract work and independent projects.
