Cold Weather Advisory for Off-campus Students

February 3, 2023

Dear Great Danes,

The National Weather Service has declared a wind chill warning in effect for the Capital Region starting this morning until noon tomorrow, Saturday, February 4, 2023. They predict that wind chill could drop to as low as 30 to 35 degrees below zero.

During this time, it is important to stay inside, stay warm and protect yourself from the elements. Temperatures this low can result in exposed skin getting frostbitten in as few as 10 minutes, increases the chance of power outages and cause your pipes to burst if it gets too cold in your apartment.

Some simple steps you can take to protect yourself is to:

  • Stay indoors. If you must go outside, bundle up in multiple layers.

  • Make sure to keep your apartment temperature at least 65 degrees to avoid pipes freezing.

  • Have your landlord or property manager’s phone number saved, as well as the phone number for your heating and electrical provider, in case you experience any power or heating issues. Most students' provider is National Grid, reachable at 800-642-4272.

  • Cats, dogs and other pets should be kept inside, as they are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia when exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Short, supervised outdoor time is recommended.

  • Stay up to date by checking weather updates for any new information.

Stay safe and have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Ken Louzier
