COVID-19 Vaccination During the Perinatal Period

Overview

According to the CDC, pregnant women are at significantly higher risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 compared with nonpregnant women.1 From January 22, 2020, to February 7, 2022, 171,428 pregnant women had COVID-19 which resulted in 273 deaths in the US.2 Between the beginning of the pandemic and February 12, 2022, a total of 99,031,934 persons had been tested for COVID-19 in NYS, and 4,864,638 tested positive.3 Of the positive cases, 51.8% were female.3 Additionally, 67,779 individuals have died from COVID-19.4 COVID-19 vaccination rates are low, and disparities exist among the perinatal population.

To ensure equitable delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations to protect pregnant and postpartum people against severe outcomes from COVID-19, these disparities need to be addressed. This webinar will inform providers on equitable delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations and expand their knowledge about screening, counseling and provision of referral for COVID-19 vaccination among the perinatal population and their families.

As a result of this activity, the learner will expand their knowledge and competence for health counseling regarding the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines for people who are pregnant and in the postpartum period, the process of getting vaccinated during pregnancy and postpartum, and providing COVID-19 vaccination resources for patients and providers.

After watching this webinar participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines for people who are pregnant and in the postpartum period. 
  • Describe the process for getting vaccinated during pregnancy and postpartum.
