Department anthropologist John Rowan: Humans have led to 'waves of animal extinctions'

Extinct North American mammals including various types of camels, bears and sloths

It’s been long known that prehistoric mammals like saber-toothed cats, mastodons and mammoths romped through North America before their eventual extinction.

Yet while scientists were aware of the human link to the wipeout, little was understood regarding how those losses reverberated throughout food chains, or the connections between how species interact within an ecosystem.
