Student Transfer Appeal Process For Transfers from SUNY Associate Degree Programs Only
Effective January 2009, The State University of New York requires its campuses to provide students transferring from SUNY associate degree programs a process to appeal a SUNY campus’ decision on the granting or placement of credit earned at a prior SUNY campus. The University at Albany’s Campus Transfer Representative, charged with coordinating the process, is Dr. Sue R. Faerman, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education. The appeal process is outlined here.
Once you are admitted as a matriculated student, you will be provided a tentative estimate of transfer credit. When you are scheduled for your orientation and planning conference, transfer credit from any official transcripts you have thus far provided will be processed into what is called a DARS Transfer Course Evaluation Report, a course-by-course accounting of credits you have completed and how they will transfer here. Based on this information, your DARS Degree Audit shows how the transfer credit fits into UAlbany degree requirements such as General Education Program requirements, major and minor (if you have declared one) requirements, and general electives. During your visit to campus, you will meet with an advisor to plan your schedule. The advisor can arrange to get electives changed and moved into your major, and make referrals to other offices for a review of unmet General Education requirements, missing courses, transfer credit errors, and the like.
At that point, if you do not agree with UAlbany’s updated decision on the granting or placement of credit that you have earned at a prior SUNY institution’s associate degree program, you have the right to submit an appeal to your Campus Transfer Representative. Fill out the attached appeal form and provide all requested information. Once the Vice Provost has received all of the required information, you will be provided a written response within 15 business days.
- If the decision finds merit to change a course designation, the Vice Provost will ensure that the change is made to your student record.
- If the decision is unchanged, or you have not received a response in 15 business days, you may take your appeal to the SUNY System Provost. For additional information on appealing at that level, visit
