Biography:
Distinguished professor Richard Alba is an expert on race and ethnicity, demographics, the U.S. Census and minority health disparities. In Language Assimilation Today: Bilingualism Persists More Than in the Past, But English Still Dominates, a report by the Lewis Mumford Center for Comparative Urban and Regional Research, Alba argues little has changed to threaten English as the dominant language in the U.S.

In Remaking the American Mainstream: Assimilation and Contemporary Immigration (Harvard University Press, 2003), Alba and co-author Victor Nee argue that the assimilation pattern, one of three basic patterns that describe the incorporation of immigrant groups, continues to be important in the U.S. and is evident in language, socioeconomic, residential, and marriage data. Alba is the founder and director of the Center for Social and Demographic Analysis at UAlbany, and director of the Mumford Center. He is also research co-director of UAlbany's Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities.
