Richard S. Fogarty received his doctorate in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is a specialist in the history of modern Europe and France, imperialism, and war and society. He is the author of Race and War in France: Colonial Subjects in the French Army, 1914-1918 (The Johns Hopkins University Press, forthcoming 2008), as well as several articles on France during the First World War. He is currently beginning a study on the place of Muslims in France and of Islam in conceptions of French national identity, during the first half of the twentieth century.
