Purtell is a specialist in managerial and market finance. His interests are centered on applications of managerial finance to governments and nonprofits, the use of capital markets by public-service institutions, fiscal issues at the interface among government, nonprofit and for-profit entities and the management and regulation of market and non-market risk. His most recent work has focused on the use of financial-market information as an indicator of the financial condition of governments, privatization and public-private partnerships in the areas of charitable assets sales, and the leasing of public lotteries and infrastructure, and the role that information and integration among financial regulators played in the financial collapse that led to the great recession.
