Even Roses Have Thorns: What You Need to Know about STI’s
Students today are learning less and less about sexually transmitted infections in high schools with the exception of AIDS. Yet we have an epidemic of STI’s in the US, and this has been increasing, especially among persons between the ages of 15 and 24. In this workshop we cover the STI’s that are seen most frequently in the college population including on our campus: Chlamydia, HPV, Herpes, and Gonorrhea. HIV and Hepatitis will also be addressed. We will discuss STI transmission and treatment, testing, and identify ways to reduce the risk. A condom demonstration identifying common mistakes people make when using condoms is presented.
Loveline
This popular program is most often facilitated in residence halls or for student groups. As audience members arrive they are given scrap paper and pencils and are invited to anonymously submit questions about sex, sexuality and relationships. For each question they turn in, they are given a condom or a piece of candy. A panel composed of members of Project SHAPE and the Director, a credentialed sexuality educator, respond to each of the questions. The audience determines the content of this program. We guarantee two things: you will laugh and have fun and you will learn new things!
LGBTQQPI: Alphabet Soup
This workshop discusses the meanings behind all of the ever-changing letters in this acronym. Do you know the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity? Is there a relationship? What does it mean to be intersexed, transsexual, pansexual, queer, transgender, gender queer, questioning? This is a workshop that will clear it all up and create a better understanding of sexual and gender diversity.
Sex Talk: Communicating With a Partner about Safer Sex
In our culture, most of us were not encouraged nor taught to talk openly about sexual issues. In this day and age, talking openly about sex and our personal values is an important skill so that we can protect our health and improve our relationships. In this workshop, Project SHAPE members present student-written interactive skits in which the audience is invited to choose words for the actors and then discuss the outcome. Audience members will have the opportunity to identify effective communication strategies and develop techniques to clearly and confidently express their opinions, values and feelings.
Sexual Jeopardy
This is a game that works just like the TV show but all of the categories and questions deal with sexuality or sexual health issues. Teams or individuals can play. We bring our own jeopardy board and everything you need for the game to be played. SHAPE members ask the questions, discuss the answers and keep score.
Shots, Patches and Rings...Oh My!
This is a hands-on workshop where students will be able to see, touch and learn about all of the current contraception options and the advantages and disadvantages of each. A discussion of all of the things that should be considered when choosing a method of pregnancy prevention will be included.
AIDS Update
This interactive program discusses the updated and ever-changing information and research on HIV/AIDS with a particular emphasis on transmission, testing and prevention. An interactive exercise on AIDS Risk is facilitated along with a condom demonstration covering the common mistakes people make with condoms that make them less effective.
Emergency Contraception: What You Need to Know
EC- emergency contraception, the morning after pill, Plan B, Ella - are they all the same? EC is an often misunderstood method of pregnancy prevention. This workshop will provide a close look at the emergency methods available today, how they work, when they can be used and where they can be obtained.
STI’s/HIV: Making the Connection
The relationship between HIV and other STI’s is compelling and multifaceted. This workshop provides an overview of STI/HIV connection, with an emphasis on prevention and the results of research. Participants will learn the factors influencing the likelihood of transmission, how students can assess their own risk, the effects of early testing and treatment on transmission, and why adolescent females are particularly vulnerable.
Ducks, Hippopotamuses, Penguins and Sex
Come to this fun workshop and learn all sorts of strange but true facts about sex and sexuality. You will laugh and be amazed and shake your head while learning new things. Can the sexual behavior of ducks, hippopotamuses or penguins tell us anything about our own? This workshop will cover little known facts about the animal kingdom and sexual behavior. This is meant to be fun, interesting and thought-provoking as well as educational.
Relationship Enhancement: How to Turn On Delight
We are all so busy these days it is difficult to find time to devote the energy required in our most important relationships. When juggling so many priorities, often our relationships and our selves fall to the bottom of the list. This workshop will discuss specific ways that persons can enhance all of their relationships- with partners, friends and family members- by adding more fun, more delight, more surprise and excitement. We will discuss ways to create events that will be memorable and meaningful to those you care about. Participants will have an opportunity to share their own perspectives and will leave the workshop with specific ideas that they can implement immediately to add delight to their life.
Sexual Assault: Myths and Misperceptions
In this interactive workshop, students will have the opportunity to walk around the room reading and responding to statements and facts about sexual assault, thereby testing their knowledge. A discussion of each point and the correct information will be presented and discussed.
