  Sexual Assault Response Services

It is very important that students who have been sexually assaulted, or who are unsure if they have been sexually assaulted, have access to timely information about helping resources and options. In fact, the University has a response plan that identifies key campus and community resources to assist a student in the aftermath of a rape or other type of sexual assault.

If you suspect you have been sexually assaulted, here are some things you can do right away:

For emergency safety concerns (e.g., if assailant is still nearby), call 911.

Seek medical care immediately:

  • Albany Medical Center Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Program for medical care and a forensic evidence exam: (518) 262-3131
  • Five Quad for assistance with transport to hospital: 911 or (518) 442-3131 (from off-campus or a cell phone)
  • University Health Center for basic medical care: (518) 442-5454

To report the incident:

  • University Police 911 or (518) 442-3131 (from off-campus or a cell phone)
  • Albany Police 911 or (518) 438-4000 if incident occurred off-campus
  • Office of Conflict Resolution & Civic Responsibility: (518) 442-5501

Services for Students

The University Counseling Center can assist students after a sexual assault in the following ways:

  • Provide free and confidential counseling services to assist students in dealing with their reactions to the incident as well as providing a safe space to consider what options (e.g., whom to tell, whether to report) they may wish to exercise
  • Provide information for students about key campus and community resources and options
  • Assist students with accessing campus services, such as the Dean of Undergraduate Studies Office to request academic extensions or excused absences
  • Provide consultation to students who are concerned about how to help a friend who has been sexually assaulted

Services for Parents/Guardians

  • Confer with parents about how they can assist a daughter or son after sexual assault
  • Confer with parents about concerns they may have about a daughter or son's well-being after a sexual assault including academic issues as well
  • Confer with parents about some of the key resources and options in accord with the University's Coordinated Response protocol

  • Consult to faculty/staff about specific situations and confer with them about ways they can assist a student reporting a sexual assault to them
