We offer confidential psychological counseling and referral as well as a variety of prevention and health promotion activities for your student. Please feel free to explore our website regarding our full range of services. The cost for Counseling Center services has been paid as part of tuition and University fees.

Students visit the Counseling Center for a variety of reasons. If your student is encountering difficulties at the University at Albany, we may be able to help. Some of the more common reasons students seek assistance are listed below.
- Transition or adjustment issues (homesickness, romantic break-ups, and/or family transitions)
- Relationship difficulties
- Academic performance
- Depression
- Stress and anxiety
- Identity issues and experiences, including discrimination, pertaining to gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, and religion
- Acculturation issues including migration and adjustment to new cultures
[-] Confidentiality
Student visits and conversations do not become part of any other University record. Confidential information may only be disclosed to another person if your student provides a written request authorizing the disclosure. However, there are 3 legally mandated exceptions, (1) client (student) is in immediate danger to self or others (e.g. suicide or homicide); (2) suspected child or elder abuse, neglect, or maltreatment; and (3) in legal matters, information may be subpoenaed by the court.

If you think that your student might be helped by counseling but are not sure how to encourage contact, you may consult with us about your particular circumstances.
We invite parents/family to contact us if you have a question or concern about your student. If you would like to consult with a psychologist at the Counseling Center, call 518-442-5800 or send an email to consultation@albany.edu.
[-] About Our Staff
The University Counseling Center staff is comprised of experienced mental health professionals, including licensed psychologists, and a health educator. We work closely with the University Health Center psychiatrist. Advanced doctoral trainees in clinical and counseling psychology programs also provide services under the supervision of licensed psychologists. Our diverse staff is committed to making our services accessible to all students regardless of their background.
The Counseling Center operates in accordance with federal and state laws as well as ethical principles governing our professions.
