Architecture: The Art of the Everyday
A year long exploration of the built landscape at the University at Albany and its environs

Student Competitions

In conjunction with the year-long celebration and exploration of the architectural significance of the University at Albany’s Edward Durrell Stone campus, competitions are underway for UAlbany undergraduates to write a short story, a play, or a piece of hypertext fiction; or to enter the visual competition submitting digital video, or interactive game.

Themes suggested for submissions:

  • How do individuals and/or groups experience the architectural spaces of the UAlbany campus and other spaces?
  • What are the relationships of architecture, community, and the experience of space?
  • What are some of the critical, historical and perceptual issues of architecture and visual culture?
  • How does architecture and visual design either integrate a community or alienate individuals from a community?
  • Is architecture art?
  • Does architecture shape your attitude and experiences in your day-to-day life?

Rules: Qualified entrants are currently University at Albany undergraduate students at the time of judging which takes place during Fall Semester 2006. Collaborative submissions are encouraged for all categories, with a maximum of five persons collaborating on a submission. All submissions must include full name and contact information – surface address, email address(es), and telephone number(s).

Submission Deadline – October 10, 2006

Winners to be Announced – November 15, 2006

The Award winning selections may be published in transcending silence…, a peer-reviewed undergraduate e-journal published by the Department of Women’s Studies.

All submissions will become part of the file, Architecture: The Art of the Everyday, in University Archives and available to current and future students and scholars.
