Vice President for Athletic Administration and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Lee A. McElroy Jr. joined the University at Albany in 2000 as Vice President and Director of Athletics. In this post, he provides leadership to the University’s 19 NCAA Division I athletic programs.
McElroy came to UAlbany from American University, where he served as director of athletics for four years. Prior to that, McElroy served as director of athletics at California State University, Sacramento.
He holds an M.Ed. from the University of Southern California and an Ed.D. from the University of Houston. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and history at UCLA, where he was a member of the UCLA Bruins football team.
In 2010, McElroy was appointed to the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association Board of Directors. He was among ten athletics directors named by the NCAA to a new program, the NCAA Champions Forum, which is dedicated to bringing minority football coaches closer to the hiring process. McElroy also currently serves on the America East Conference Executive Committee.
In 2008-09, McElroy was recognized as the Under Armour Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year. In 1998, he was named to the NACDA Executive Committee for the University Division, and chair of the Sears Directors Cup Committee.
McElroy serves on the boards of the National Consortium of Academics and Sports, Athletic Business magazine, and the National Minority Golf Association. He is also a fellow at the Institute of Ethics and Sportsmanship at the University of Rhode Island.
