New Graduate Students

Congratulations and welcome to the University at Albany!  In order to make your transition to graduate school as smooth as possible, click on the topics below for information you may find helpful.

Graduate Student Guidebook: This document contains important information and links for new graduate students.

Books: The Bookstore now offers eTextbooks in addition to tradition textbooks!

SUNY Card:  You will need to have your photo taken for your SUNY Card, the University ID. This card also serves as a library card, building access card and vending machine card.

Parking:  If you have a car, you’ll need a parking decal. 

Maps: Directions and maps for all of your UAlbany needs.

University Libraries:  The University provides comprehensive state-of-the-art library, research and information services through the University Library and the Science Library on the uptown campus and the Dewey Graduate Library on the downtown campus. 

Academic Calendar: This lists many dates applicable to class schedules as well as deadlines for potential registration adjustments.

Housing:  For information on housing, please refer to the Department of Residential Life. In addition to on campus housing, the Department of Residential Life also maintains a Housing Registry that can help with your search for off-campus housing. The Office of Parking and Mass Transit Services supports students who use their own cars or take city bus lines.

Buses:  Show your SUNY Card and ride ALL CDTA bus lines at no charge with the exception of the Northway Express and Star Buses!

Health Care:  Student Health Services provides routine medical services year round for all enrolled students.  The emergency number is (518) 442-3131 but if busy, call the University Police Department at (518) 442-3130. Enrolled graduate students are required to provide proof of Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination, as per New York State Law. Please click here for more information.

Health Insurance:  International students will be automatically enrolled in the SUNY plan, but those who have other coverage and want to have the SUNY insurance charge waived must submit a waiver application to the Office of International Education (SL G40) by the posted deadline on the International Student Services website .

Graduate Student Association:  All enrolled graduate students are members of the completely student-run GSA.  Membership benefits include opportunities to apply for grants, participate in GSA governance and social events. 

Working Out: Fitness center, athletic training facilities, basketball courts, racquetball courts, an indoor track and a swimming pool are available for your fitness needs.  

Banking:  Banking services are available in the Campus Center Food Court.
