America East Honors Our Athlete-Scholars

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 16, 2019) — Ten University at Albany student-athletes graduating this spring will have additions to their mantelpieces that go beyond their degrees. Each has been honored with an America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award, as announced by the sports conference office on Tuesday.

The America East honored 61 student-athletes from its nine participating universities, with the Great Danes having the second most honorees among the schools, behind just Maine. The UAlbany awardees boasted GPAs ranging from 3.76 to 3.95.

The men’s lacrosse program led the way for the University with four awards: Erik Dluhy, Matt Perla, Alex Brown and Noah Taylor. Oher honorees were cross country runner Cara Sherman and high jumper Victoria Stoffel from women’s track & field; pitcher Dan Yankowski from baseball; Alec Ambruso from men’s cross country; softball infielder Kelly Barkevich; and defender Savanah Courtney from women’s soccer.

The award recognizes student-athletes graduating this spring who compiled career GPAs of 3.75 or higher as undergraduate students.

The Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award was approved by the America East Board of Presidents in June of 2013 and was implemented for the 2013-14 academic year. In total, 350 elite student-athletes have been honored as part of the program.
