Honoring Victim Advocacy

Carol Stenger holds her plaque in the rotunda of the Albany County Courthouse after being honored with a victims' advocacy award by District Attorney David Soares.

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 16, 2019) — UAlbany's director of the Advocacy Center for Sexual Violence has been recognized by the Albany County District Attorney’s Office for her steadfast dedication to helping victims in the aftermath of assault.

Carol Stenger was presented with the “Elizabeth Martin Outstanding Achievement in Victim Advocacy Award” by District Attorney David Soares at his office’s annual Ceremony of Remembrance in April.

The ceremony is held each year in conjunction with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The event provides survivors with an opportunity to share reflections on the difficult journey that victims of crime face, and to commend the community activists, law enforcement personnel and crime victim advocates who work to help victims.

Stenger’s career dedicated to student advocacy spans more than 30 years, having worked in various offices across the University, including Residential Life, Judicial Affairs and Counseling and Psychological Services. In 2014, Stenger helped establish and is now the director of the University’s Advocacy Center for Sexual Violence, which provides a safe and welcoming environment for students to receive support and advocacy services in the aftermath of sexual violence.

“For those of us who know and work with Carol, it comes as no surprise that District Attorney Soares chose her for this award,” said Michael Christakis, vice president for Student Affairs, the division that oversees the Advocacy Center. “From providing a safe space for students after they’ve experienced assault, to accompanying them to the hospital at all hours of the night, and to seemingly everything in between, Carol is always committed to our students’ health and well-being."
